Yeah, I know, solar and alternative energy stocks in general are not very sexy right now with all of the recessionary influences on this ‘pricey’ substitute to the status quo. But, I still think solar is attractive beyond its positive environmental impact. Chinese solar stocks in particular have captured my attention of late.
One would think with all of the negative articles surrounding the solar industry that it would be the last place you would want to put your money. We have been, after all, in a recession all year and oil prices are WAAAY off their 2008 highs. To the contrary.. Chinese solar stocks have been, in most part, very profitable. Check out the below chart of STP. TSL has shot up 215% YTD, and SOLF up 50%.

So why are Chinese solar stocks catching my attention? Especially after not-so-hot earnings last week from SOL and JASO?

As we all know, solar stocks took off after a wonderful earnings announcement from $SPWRA on Thursday. So, what’s next?
This week will continue to prove interesting for solar stocks as the powerhouse $FSLR gets set to report earnings on Thursday ($ESLR reports, too). A good report will obviously add fuel to the bull move, but a bad report could do quite the opposite. My plan is to be ready for either outcome. I will also focus attention on scalps between now and then, but I anticipate a bullish sentiment unless the overall market reverses and pulls solars down.
Now to decide which solar stocks to play..

I haven’t been following solar much lately and I think that is a mistake. We’re going to be talking about alternative energy for years to come and there will likely be good money to be had here. For tonight, I’m going to take a quick look at some of the more interesting charts. Click on the ticker for my thoughts and annotated chart. One theme that will stand out is that most are approaching strong levels of resistance. My gut – solar down first part of the week (hope I’m wrong).
- ESLR
- YGE
- JASO
- STP - very strong since March. I think over bought temporarily and at resistance level – worth watching.
- CSIQ
- FSLR

Nice pullback today after Monday’s insane bull move. I’m actually happy with today’s action. Maybe some consolidation and move back up Tuesday? Not sure, but looks fairly good right now and I have a few stocks/ETFs I’m watching just in case.
A look at some recent watch list stocks..
> Last night I Twitted the following as technically healthy for possible bull moves.. at least worth watching for direction confirmation -
- looked for oil down – yup, $DUGup. Not a big day, but looks ok. I’m actually not too confident in the direction of oil right now – probably not playing DIG/DUG here.
- Missed the call on GGP – thought we might run some more. See pic.
- GERN – stem cell got a lot of talk from Obama tonight. Possible scalp (wouldn’t hold).
- BKE pulled back with market – needed to.
- PIR – offered more huge returns today if you participated
- AINVis looking really good. Great volume and moving off accumulation.
> Yesterday on my blog, I added 6 pennies to the watch list.. 2 broke out today – DTG and GMO!
> Other stock mentions this week that performed well or I’m still interested in -
- BLDP
- CLF - I was looking for the move through $15 (didn’t take position), but still interested thanks to volume.
- YGE was on my watch list heading into Monday and I actually took a position at $4.21.. congestion here, but I hoping for a move soon.
- CORS- I was looking for a move through $.25 – DAMN, why didn’t I pull the trigger.. almost touched $.5 two days later… grrr.
Some new stocks that showed up on my scans this evening…
- PLLL - worth a look.. volume interest.
- FRP- building a box (channel trading). Huge day today, yes, but volume interest. Looking for horizontal resistance breakout
- HT - watching . loco volume.
- PCX – watching against trend line resistance
- KFN tried to reach for the stars today, but ended up tightly inside of its triangle with strong volume.
- LXK over $17.25
- GU- just a gut feel on tight bollinger bands.
That’s all I have for now – I’m tired.

This has been a great week as I and many others booked profits on some huge moves. All of my trades are currently settling, so I don’t have any cash to play with on Friday, but it’s probably for the best. I made 20% on CENX today after a great tip from @kunalOO.
NOTE – if you’re a trader and not part of the stocktwits community, you’re really missing out.
For Friday, my gut says the market will be down after a very bullish run. However, even if we don’t retreat, who cares.. you play what the market gives you. The market doubled a lot of portfolios this week and it will continue to if you play the trends.
Few charts that showed up on my screens this evening..
BLDP – I was eyeballing this one last week and am still interested.. needs to break through $1 like it means it.
HPQ through horizontal resistance at $30
CLF – through $15.
YGE – horizontal channel trading with very narrow bollinger bands… watching.
CPO – nice symmetrical triangle with improving MACD and RSI.
CPE – horizontal channel testing top. Big move today, but looking to add.
LVLT – EMA4 crossing EMA13
CORS – Watching to see if this moves through $.25
SCHN – over $30
WFR over $16 – lots of resistance.
