Solar on Fire

solar_iconAs we all know, solar stocks took off after a wonderful earnings announcement from $SPWRA on Thursday. So, what’s next?

This week will continue to prove interesting for solar stocks as the powerhouse $FSLR gets set to report earnings on Thursday ($ESLR reports, too).  A good report will obviously add fuel to the bull move, but a bad report could do quite the opposite. My plan is to be ready for either outcome. I will also focus attention on scalps between now and then, but I  anticipate a bullish sentiment unless the overall market reverses and pulls solars down.

Now to decide which solar stocks to play..

The Sun is on Fire!!!

Solar stocks have been on fire lately with the likes of LDK, DSTI, ESLR, and SOL all making huge moves over the last few days.  On Sunday, I posted that we may have a sunny week in solar stocks after healthy Friday moves from SOL, CSUN, and SPWRA.  I focused on 4 stocks that I hoped would make a move if solar continued upwards – SOLR, ESLR, FSLR, and LDK.  Well, 2 out of 4 broke out and broke out big – the other two are still trading sideways. Are they next?  Here are a few stocks I’m watching to follow the big moves we’ve seen from others:

  • SOLRstill trading in a channel on very tight bollinger bands.
  • FSLRstill building on descending triangle.
  • WFRpulled back today, but has Full Sto and RSI14 support to go higher.

Congrats if you were part of the solar part this week.

Sunny Week For Solar?

Friday was a big day for a large number of stocks in the solar sector – most notable being SOL, jumping up over 15% on what had already been a bullish few weeks after the $4.50 horizontal resistance breakout on June 1.

Others have joined the party, including CSUN, which broke through MA200 on Friday on strong volume.  A look at the daily shows lots of accumulation in this chart and many bullish indicators.  SPWRA executed a perfect breakout, as well, and looks destined to go for more (remember, this is just my opinion – do your own DD).

So, which solar stocks are setup the best to move if the trend continues?  Here are a few that showed up on my scans that I’ll be watching Monday:

  • SOLR – consolidating under MA50 on narrowing bollinger bands.  I’ll watch for a move through $6.5 before I go long.
  • ESLR – following the same pattern as SOLR. Horizontal resistance at $2.  I’m interested in volume moves above that.
  • FSLR – Long above trendline resistance and short below horizontal support at 175
  • LDK – Could go either way out of this triangle.

Massive List of New Watch List Stocks

I’m finally over the flu – man that was rough.  Life is back to normal now, so let’s talk stocks.  I was hoping to get involved today, but was just too busy at work…. again.

Quick look at the Watch List:

PMI – I’m getting quite annoyed with PMI – will it ever breakout through MA50 so I can jump on the move?

ICO – I’m not happy here – I was hoping for a move through $2, but it just hasn’t happened.  I’ll watch – but from a distance.

CENX – behaving well and will get excited if it moves through $4.

BBI – tired of watching it.  Moving on.

PLD – sitting on MA50. Bounce time?  Like a few others, I’m losing interest unless we get the bounce tomorrow.

IOKABOOOOOOM! Play of the week, so far.  Absolutely wonderful day trade play on the move through $2.

BA – nice volume today, but I’m really getting tired of the a lot of stocks on the watch list.

CHTRQ showed lots of profit taking today.  Glad I made my profits here already. Removing from the list.

PCX – Watching at $5.

FIG – I originally added it to the watch list when a nice pennant was forming.  Now it is back on my list because of the horizontal support bounce today at $2.25

ARM looking likely to do  something interesting any day now.. besides the 11% move today.

ALD is sitting on MA50 and MA20.  Fall through here could be ugly.

Sun Spots

The last 3 news makers from the solar industry have all been positive.  News from SPWRA, SOLR, and ESLR (I haven’t checked out earnings on this one yet) all show that the solar business is still sunny.. well, at least not too cloudy.

A few of the more notables:

SPWRA has been steadily moving up over the past week, but only saw one day of large volume.  I can’t find an entry here, but I still would like to see this thing swing all the way to $45.  $37.5 – next resistance.  To be honest with you, I’m just not feeling it – but, maybe I’m wrong.

FSLR – If you glance at the chart today, you might think we’re breaking out.  BUT, I think we need another day to confirm.  Check out the chart – looks like we’re at horizontal and trendline resistance.

ESLR chart has the look of a probable swing trade candidate – price attempting to move through EMA4.  However, if it can’t sustain this move tomorrow and confirm that EMA4 is NOW support, I wouldn’t play it.

I think we’re within a week of a big move in solar – the question  is the direction. More to come.
